Finding a name for a company is no small task. At MEDzooz Academy, our name wasn’t chosen at random. It came from thoughtful discussion, creative exploration, and a bit of early-morning inspiration. Here’s the story behind MEDzooz Academy.
Starting With “Med”
When Allison and I first began brainstorming possible names, one thing was clear: we wanted “Med” in the title. Our mission centers around healthcare and medical education, so it felt essential that the name immediately signal that focus. However, “Med” is an extremely common term, and we wanted to ensure our name was distinctive and unique.
Inspiration on the Run
Those who know me well are familiar with my love for running. One day, inspiration struck during an early morning run, around 5:30 a.m. at the park. While thinking about what kinds of words could pair with “Med,” I imagined a runner zooming past me.
That image sparked the idea of speed and efficiency in learning. I thought: What about Med Zoom? However, after reflecting on it, that name didn’t quite fit. It didn’t feel distinctive enough, and it brought to mind virtual communication rather than medical education.
A Love for Palindromes and a Breakthrough
I’ve always been fascinated by palindromes, words or phrases that read the same forward and backward. For example, “nurses run” and “taco cat” read the same forward and backward. While thinking again about Med Zoo, I flipped it around and landed on zooz to create “MEDzooz.”
That was the moment everything clicked. “MEDzooz” was distinctive and memorable. It was also reminiscent of Zeus, the Greek god. Although Zeus is often associated with power, he is also known for wisdom, order, and protecting those under his care. Additionally, the name “Zeus” also naturally brings to mind ancient Greece and the Greek Golden Age, with its rich tradition of scholarship and figures like Plato, Socrates, and Aristotle.
Overall, the name conveyed a sense of strength and leadership, qualities we strive to reflect in the educational resources we create for medical students. The final piece was adding Academy, which felt like a natural extension of the name. An academy represents structured learning, mentorship, and the pursuit of knowledge.
At MEDzooz Academy, our name reflects our commitment to strong foundations, clear thinking, and excellence in medical education. Just as the great academies of the past shaped generations of thinkers, our goal is to support medical students with tools that make learning efficient, meaningful, and empowering.
